"The Samaritan Persisted"
Our gospel reading, John 4:1-42, presents a familiar story. Perhaps, too familiar. That story, commonly referred to as The Woman at the Well, has collected some…unfortunate addendums. For values of “unfortunate”, that is, that include awful, terrible, misogynistic, pernicious, and bearing false witness against a neighbor. Reading this story again, we can wonder:
• Why has this story been susceptible to such ill treatment?
• How might we begin to correct its ill-gotten bad reputation?
• What can this boundary-crossing story tell us about what Jesus valued — and thus, by extension, what God values?
• Which boundaries do we need to courageously cross in our lives?
