"Power to Serve"

We are in the midst of the season of Epiphany.....the season of enlightenment about the power and presence of God through Jesus Christ in our lives.  In our society the word "power" makes us cringe because we see so many examples of its negative effect.  But recognizing the power that God gives us is a power that helps, supports, encourages and loves or the "POWER TO SERVE" is radically different in nature and scope.  It also sends us to different places to do different things.  Let's see how we recognize that different perspective on "power" and where it really lies.

All are invited to be with us on Sunday at 9 and 10:30 a.m..  Please join us and invite someone to come along with you!!  ALL are welcome!  See you on Sunday!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

Lent

Lenten Brunch

The Education Committee will be having a Lenten Brunch following the second service on Sunday, February 18th. Join us for food and fellowship. Look for a sign up in the narthex to bring a dish to come soon. Hope to see you there!

Lenten Bible Study

Our Lenten bible study will be "Embracing the Uncertain" by Magrey R. DeVega.  Just turning on the news lets us know we are living in uncertain times. Economic instabilities, eruptions of violence, and natural catastrophes can alter the lives and landscapes of entire communities. Our individual lives are often just as unsteady: relationships can break, plans can falter, and confidence can fail.

DeVega invites readers to engage and wrestle with life’s uncertainties, not ignore them. The first six chapters focus on six post-Transfiguration, pre-Passion stories in the Gospels. Each of these stories are signposts in the gospel narrative, pointing down at a world filled with uncertainty, but pointing us forward to a cross that can show us how to follow Jesus with courage, hope, and obedience.

Join us on Tuesday mornings (10:30 a.m. to noon) starting on February 21st or Wednesday evenings (6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) Starting on February 22nd.  Books cost $10.  The sign up sheet is in the narthex.

Bible Study

 Our next bible study  is HALF TRUTHS by Adam Hamilton and is offered on Wednesday evenings (6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) and Tuesday mornings (10:30 a.m. to noon). The plan for Wednesday remains to join the youth for dinner at about 6:30 p.m. and then as they go off to their activities, we will go to our class. We will conclude at 8:30 p.m., about the same time as the youth finish.  Classes have already started, but please join us!!

True or false:
1. Everything happens for a reason.
2. God helps those who help themselves.
3. God won’t give you more than you can handle.
4. God said it, I believe it, that settles it.
5. Love the sinner, hate the sin.
All true? Not so fast. We’ve heard these phrases all of our lives, but in Adam Hamilton’s new book, Half Truths, you’ll learn that although they capture some element of truth, when compared to the wisdom found in Scripture, they’re really just popular sayings.

PRISON CLOTHING MINISTRY – EXPANDS

Our Outreach Committee is pleased to announce that our Prison Clothing Ministry is GROWING AND EXPANDING.  We are now able to partner with other participating area churches in the Suits for Success Program.  This non-profit, volunteer organization which was founded by Bill Denwood of Community Methodist Church in Naperville provides, at no charge, gently used clothes to parolees throughout the State of Illinois that are suitable for interviews with prospective employers.   Prior to this time, WUMC’s donations served only the Logan Correctional Facility in Lincoln, Illinois.

The Suits for Success Program also partners with area dry-cleaners which serve as drop-off points and clean and press the clothes for free.  The participating dry cleaner closest to us is Signature Cleaners, Steve Hirmer, Owner, on Werhli in Naperville.  You may drop off your donations directly with Steve or bring them to WUMC and place in the boxes in the hallway which leads from the Narthex to Fellowship Hall.  THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR DONATIONS!!!!

Celebrate "Souper" Bowl Sunday

Good News! Good Results! During 2017, Woodridge United Methodist Church (WUMC) gave 500 pounds of food and $1,430 in monetary donations to the West Suburban Community Pantry (Woodridge Food Pantry). This represents a 30 percent increase compared to our 2016 donations. Since 2015, our donations are up over 63 percent. The Food Pantry is celebrating the "Souper Bowl" by collecting hearty soups. Please fill the basket at the entrance to our sanctuary with cans of soup. Your donations help feed the less fortunate in our community!
