"In Invitation Not to be Missed"

Over the last several weeks, as we have walk through the Acts of the Apostles and Paul’s first journey to the newly established Christian churches, we have discovered that many of the challenges they faced are the same (or very similar) to the ones we face in 2018.  The struggles of old have become the struggles of the present!!  The political and social climate have been far from peaceful and welcoming, making the environment for worship less than pleasant and meaningful.

We have been lifting up our responsibility for the future of the church by sharing some of our hopes and dreams.  Where should we focus our time, money and effort?  Are there some needs in our community that we are not addressing?  Are there some people we have not touched?  How do we face the continuing challenges of relevance, attendance and finance?  What should we do to continue to share the Good News about God’s love to future generations?  You were invited to write those dreams down a couple of weeks ago.  Now what happens with the implementation?

All of these questions have an answer that is all too familiar…….______________ (insert your name on the blank line)!!  We have each been given AN INVITATION NOT TO BE MISSED.  Yes, we are all a part of what happens in the present and in the future of our witness from this place.  We will take a look at Lydia’s story to see if there are any parallels in our lives.  Have we responded to the invitation we have been extended?

Join us on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and we will talk about it!  ALL are welcome!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Summer Sunday School Teachers Needed

Looking for an opportunity to help out this summer? Looking to meet some of the kids in the church? Sign up to teach summer Sunday School. Lessons are available in the narthex. We need to have one teacher each week to teach Sunday School. This gives all the amazing teachers we have during the year a nice break. Men, women and youth are welcome to sign up to teach. Please see Jorie Manderfield if you have any questions.

Beginning Tuesday, September 11th and Wednesday, September 12th we will begin a new season of Bible study classes on WAY OF LIFE by Brian McLaren. This study is based on the book by Brian McLaren entitled THE GREAT SPIRITUAL MIGRATION. Pastor Danita and Pastor Dave are encouraging each person who plans to participate in the Fall Bible study classes to read THE GREAT SPIRITUAL MIGRATION over the summer. The book is available through Cokesbury and Amazon including a Kindle version. We will have information and sign up for the fall study during the month of August. For now, enjoy your summer reading!

In order for our church to continue to participate at PADS a WUMC PADS coordinator is needed. Other tasks include recruiting volunteers each fall to donate food and to volunteer at PADS on the nights we act as host, maintain and post the volunteers lists, send out reminder emails and bulletin articles each time it is our time to serve. For more information please contact Debbie Wordinger 331 645-7779. Inquiring about the position doesn’t mean you are on the hook for it! But if you are considering if this is a job you can do, give Debbie a call.

Our Church, Woodridge United Methodist Church (WUMC), partners with the West Suburban Food Pantry "Food Pantry", located just off 63rd Street, to provide food for the economically disadvantaged members of our community. WE ARE ASKING EACH MEMBER OF WUMC TO BRING A DONATION OF NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS TO OUR CHURCH AT LEAST ONCE, IF NOT EACH WEEK, DURING THE MONTH OF JULY 2018.

The Food Pantry is in great need of the following:

- Canned Tomato Products

- Canned Tuna and Chicken

- Pancake Mix and Syrup

- Canned Fruits and Vegetables

- Peanut Butter and Jelly

Church donations having fallen off this year, i.e. our Church’s donations, thus far in 2018, are 43 percent below what we contributed in 2017. PLEASE HELP US MAKE UP GROUND BY BRINGING YOUR DONATIONS TO CHURCH AND PLACING THEM IN OR NEAR THE BASKET THAT SITS ON THE FLOOR ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE MIDDLE ENTRANCE TO OUR SANCTUARY. THANK YOU!

Our Outreach Committee is pleased to announce that we are now able to partner with other participating area churches in the Suits for Success Program.  This non-profit, volunteer organization which was founded by Bill Denwood of Community Methodist Church in Naperville provides, at no charge, gently used clothes to parolees throughout the State of Illinois that are suitable for interviews with prospective employers.   Prior to this time, WUMC’s donations served only the Logan Correctional Facility in Lincoln, Illinois.

The Suits for Success Program also partners with area dry-cleaners which serve as drop-off points and clean and press the clothes for free.  The participating dry cleaner closest to us is Signature Cleaners, Steve Hirmer, Owner, on Werhli in Naperville.  You may drop off your donations directly with Steve or bring them to WUMC and place in the boxes in the hallway which leads from the Narthex to Fellowship Hall.  PLEASE NO SHOES!
