Outreach to the Community and World OLD

The Outreach Committee provides opportunities for our church to participate in ministries that reach out to our local community, the nation, and the world. We support United Methodist ministries as well as many local charitable organizations, such as Public Action to Deliver Shelter (P.A.D.S.), the West Suburban Community Pantry, the South DuPage CROP Walk, and our sister congregation, Lincoln UMC.  We also organize holiday food box drives during Thanksgiving and the Holiday season.

Statement from the General Commission on Religion and Race on the Continuing Protests at Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota

Woodridge UMC has a history of mission with the Standing Rock Reservation.  Please read the newsletter from the commission about the United Methodist Church's stance on this important issue.

Our Outreach Committee is pleased to announce that our Prison Clothing Ministry is GROWING AND EXPANDING. We are partnering with other participating area churches in the Suits for Success Program. This non-profit, volunteer organization which was founded by Bill Denwood of Community Methodist Church in Naperville provides, at no charge, gently used clothes to parolees throughout the State of Illinois that are suitable for interviews with prospective employers. Prior to this time, WUMC’s donations served only the Logan Correctional Facility in Lincoln, Illinois.

The Suits for Success Program also partners with area dry-cleaners which serve as drop-off points and clean and press the clothes for free. The participating dry cleaner closest to us is Signature Cleaners, Steve Hirmer, Owner, on Werhli in Naperville. You may drop off your donations directly with Steve or bring them to WUMC and place in the boxes in the hallway which leads from the Narthex to Fellowship Hall. THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR DONATIONS!!!!

Woodridge United Methodist Church (WUMC) Donates Food to the: WEST SUBURBAN COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY

Our Church, WUMC, donates food to the West Suburban Community Food Pantry on an ongoing basis.  From January through April 2015, WUMC has contributed 290 lbs. of food.

The West Suburban Community Food Pantry is located in Woodridge, IL at 6809 Hobson Valley Drive, Unit #118, and serves clients that are economically disadvantaged on the following days:  Tuesdays from 8:30 am to 11:30 am and 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm; Thursdays from 8:30 am to 11:30 am and 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm; and Saturdays from 8:30 am to 11:30 am.  Generally, a family may receive 125 lbs. of food monthly.

HOW TO DONATE: Bring non-perishable items to Church and place them in the basket located on the floor on the left side of the middle entrance to our Sanctuary.  There is a sign in front of the basket that reads “Woodridge Food Pantry”.   In addition to food items, the Pantry is always in need of diapers, baby wipes, and household and personal hygiene items.

Please give generously to this most important local mission.  Thank you!

Woodridge UMC in National Spotlight! Bread for the World interviews Pastor Dave

The following is an excerpt from the Bread for the World Blog: Ask a Pastor: Why Should We Talk to Congress About U.S. Food Aid?

Rev. Dave Buerstetta of Woodridge United Methodist Church in Chicago, Ill., recently added his name to a letter asking his senator to protect food aid. We asked him why he thought it was important for the faith community to be part of the conversation on food aid with Congress. Here is what he said:

Loving God with our whole selves and loving our neighbors as ourselves requires seeking justice. Seeking justice requires trying to change the cultural systems that make, and keep, people poor or hungry or oppressed. So seeking justice – transforming systems to better emulate the Reign of God on earth, for which we pray every single week – requires advocacy.

About the Red Bird Mission

Red Bird Mission and Clinic have been providing ministries in this region of the Appalachian Mountains since 1921. Today the need remains critical in this isolated, rural distressed area. Chronic poverty, lack of jobs, poor housing, and rugged mountainous terrain provide obstacles to a fuller life for the residents of this area. Red Bird Mission and Clinic strives to meet these needs through ministry in five areas: Education, Health and Wellness, Community Outreach, Economic Opportunity, and Community Housing Improvement.

Trinity United Methodist Church, Our Sister Church in Joliet

For the past two years Woodridge United Methodist has been developing a relationship with Trinity United Methodist.  These are the things we did to assist our friends in Christ at Trinity in the past year:

  • Filled and Delivered Easter baskets for the children of the church
  • Donated and delivered 20 food boxes at both Thanksgiving and Christmas
  • Donated and delivered 20 hams and turkeys at both Thanksgiving and Christmas
  • Had five people from our church participate in a six week summer tutoring program
  • Sent our Vacation Bible School materials to Trinity after our program was over
  • Donated tables and chairs to their kindergarten
  • Located a projector that was donated for use during their services
  • From our February Outreach collection we sent $900 to Trinity and their food pantry (Ridgewood Community Ministries).

What opportunities are coming up to continue our involvement?  February’s Outreach will be divided between two neighborhood Methodist community services: Humboldt Park Social Services in Chicago and Ridgewood United Community Ministries at Trinity.
