A Reversal of Expectations
This Sunday we will celebrate Children's Sabbath. The observance of Children's Sabbath started 27 years ago and is sponsored by the Children's Defense Fund. It unites faith communities of every religious tradition across the nation to 1.) raise awareness of problems facing children and families in our nation (such as poverty, gun violence and lack of health care); 2.) explore texts and teachings in religious traditions that call us to nurture and protect children with love and justice and 3.) to engage people of faith in immediate and long term action to nurture, protect and seek justice for children.
The Gospel according to Mark will allow us to eavesdrop on the conversation between James and John and Jesus about who will be the greatest. But the response of Jesus shows "A REVERSAL OF EXPECTATIONS". While James and John want to have the "best seat in the house", Jesus reminds them that it comes with some hefty expectations. Let's talk about those expectations and how we fit in.
Reflections:
"We like James & John, need to remember to share God's love with all of God's children rather than worry about how God will reward us."
"We are all children - of God!" -Faye
"It's not just about the children we see. It's about all Children of God." - Karen
