Erasing History?
How do you solve a problem like Saul? — “He’s a darling! He’s a devil!”
Or, about a thousand years later, how do you solve a problem like John? — “When I’m with him I’m confused, out of focus, and bemused. He’s wild! He’s a riddle!”
While neither John nor Saul would likely be described as a moonbeam, they both meet an unjust fate.
Both of our readings this week (from 1 Samuel and Mark) present us with a story of The Powers That Be regretting a decision and using that vaunted power and privilege to attempt a cover up.
How do we respond to such injustice in our time? Throw up our hands and say:
“Same as it ever was.”
“There’s nothing new under the sun.”
“That sounds like a you problem, not a me problem.”
Or some other similar, resigned-to-our-fate, shoulder shrug of a statement?
But what if apathy isn’t our calling? What if there is another way? A more faithful way? What if, with Jesus as our guide, there is a life-giving way to respond to the death-dealing ways of power and authority?
Pastor Dave will wrestle with these questions and more this Sunday, August 7th, in his sermon, “Erasing History?”
Worship with us Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in person or online via our Woodridge UMC YouTube Channel. All are welcome!
