Finding Comfort on the Mountaintop and in the Valley
It doesn’t make sense.
This Sunday, February 14th — among all the other things — is the last Sunday before the beginning of Lent, meaning it is Transfiguration Sunday. What’s Transfiguration Sunday?
It is so named because we read the story (this year, the version from the Gospel of Mark) of Jesus taking a small group of disciples up on a mountain where they witness him “transfigured before them.” While up there, the disciples see Jesus talking with none other than the superstar prophets, Moses and Elijah. Then, as if all that were not enough, they hear a voice that can only be the very voice of God.
Nothing makes any sense.
So Peter starts babbling, desperate to try to fill the chasm — the deep void — of his lack of understanding. Because nothing that he and his friends do or see or hear or say makes any sense. Plus, Jesus tells them not to talk about their experience.
What?! They just have to come back down and go right back into their life as if nothing profound just happened?? That doesn’t make sense.
None of this makes any sense.
So what do we do with this story? How do we learn from it and honor it and yet shape it to speak a word we need to hear today?
Pastor Dave will wrestle with those questions in his sermon, “Finding Comfort On the Mountaintop and In the Valley.”
Worship with us this Sunday, February 14th at 10:00AM on our Woodridge UMC YouTube Channel.
