Uncommon Wisdom 2

Proverbs 31:10-31 describes “a capable woman.” She seeks, works, and provides. She rises at night, provides food, and oversees her servants and household. She considers and buys a field, plants a vineyard, sells merchandise, and spins clothing. She extends her hands to the poor, even while she provides good things for her household. She herself is dressed in strength and wears fine garments of royal purple linen. This passage portrays a remarkable woman. Often, this text is used on Mother’s Day to express gratitude to mothers, at memorial services to honor a godly wife and mother, or during women’s retreats. However, when we limit its use to these occasions, we miss its broader message. The woman character in Proverbs 31 is active both inside and outside her home. She works really hard, and her hard works blesses her family and also blesses the marketplace and the entire community. Wisdom, as depicted through her, provides for the needs of all.
