Humanitarian Spirit
Attending the synagogue on the Sabbath was a regular part of Jesus’ life. On one occasion, he stood up to read from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah and declared:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Jesus was anointed to bring good news to the poor. Why the poor? Because the poor are often the ones left behind, overlooked, or exploited by systems that favor the wealthy and powerful. Even today, wealth inequality and social injustice continue to create deep divides in our world.
The Apostle Paul, in his second letter to the Corinthians, reminds us of the importance of fairness and generosity. He writes, “...that there may be a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need.”
What does this mean for us as followers of Jesus Christ? Don’t you believe that God has placed within us a Spirit of compassion and justice—a Humanitarian Spirit—to respond to the needs around us?
